Adams’s Apple – Thyroid Cartilage

The prominence in the front of the neck is caused by a boxlike structure, known medically as the thyroid cartilage, that houses the two vocal cords. The thyroid cartilage lies at the entrance to the windpipe or trachea, and is especially noticeable in men because of the acute angle formed by its side walls. In women, the structure is less prominent because the angle caused the side walls is flatter and there is more fat in the neck.
